Council Reviews Liquor Licenses and Budget

Wednesday, December 14 2011

City council breezed through a full agenda last night.

The city’s annual liquor license review generated the most discussion.  Councilor Dave Gregory noted that Public Safety responds to calls at the Harbor View Bar almost eight times more often than any other establishment in town with a liquor license.  Public Safety Director Jamie Sunderland said he didn’t think it was a reflection on how the business is managed and recommended that council take no action.

The other items on the agenda passed with little or no discussion.

Council adopted the consent agenda, which contained a resolution that entitles Unalaska to $363,706 in state fish-tax revenue.

Councilors voted unanimously in favor of an ordinance that ensures city employees don’t take pay cuts with promotions.

They also unanimously adopted the first reading of an ordinance that amends the budget, moving $4.5 million dollars from the general fund to the landfill waste storage tank and Summer Bay road realignment projects.  As part of that ordinance, they also accepted a 716 thousand dollar grant from the Environmental Protection Agency that will help fund part of the new water treatment plant.

In a separate resolution Council approved a 30-thousand dollar project to replace the aging ladder on the water tower.

The meeting concluded with two motions on Mayor and City Council travel.  The first approved funds for Councilors Zac Schasteen, Zoya Johnson and Dick Peck and Mayor Shirley Marquardt to travel to the Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference in February.  The second approved Mayor Marquardt’s travel to the Alaska Municipal League Winter Legislative Meeting, also in February.
