Council Revisits City Compensation Plan

Tuesday, September 25 2012

Employee pay is at the top of this evening’s City Council agenda.

An ordinance granting certain city employees a cost of living increase is up for public hearing and second reading. Then, in work session, Lori Messer of the Minneapolis-based consulting group Fox Lawson and Associates, will present a roadmap for updating the city’s classification and compensation plan.

The plan hasn’t been updated since 1994, despite multiple attempts. Previous studies have either been incomplete or compared Unalaska to the lower 48. Changes to the classification plan could shift some city employees’ job descriptions or compensation.

Council will also consider a resolution authorizing the sale of six retired generators and an ambulance. The appointment of Karen Pilande to the Iliuliuk Family and Health Services Board of Directors is on the consent agenda.

Just Saying... on Saturday, September 29 2012:

Compensation plan and job classification is a great way to ensure the City is keeping up with the increase in the cost of living, especially in Unalaska. However, it is my understanding that the City has paid several agencies to do a compensation and job classification analysis several times, have paid thousands of dollars for the report, only to hear the cold hard facts that they are far behind on keeping up with the cost of living expenses, and decide to keep the analysis “in draft form” and unavailable. Put in simple terms, “stall tactic.” I find it interesting that the city is once again spending thousands of dollars for something that betting people would say, nothing will be done yet again, except for issuing raises to the “higher ups”, who are making somewhere in the neighborhood of $125,000.00 per year plus bonuses. Makes one wonder who is running who……We'll have to see what comes of this new analysis.
