Council to consider preferential use agreement renewal

Tuesday, November 23 2010

Unalaska, AK – Tonight, city council will meet to discuss zoning issues and the Preferential Use Agreement with Horizon Lines.

The meeting will open with a public hearing concerning the zoning classification of a parcel of land at Devilfish Point. During the regular session, an ordinance that would change the classification from a holding zone and marine-dependent industrial portion of land to an unzoned Native allotment will be considered.

Council will then move onto the work session, where it will hear a fisheries update from resource analyst Frank Kelty and open discussion on the Preferential Use Agreement with Horizon Lines. The consideration of the PUA has been scheduled on the agenda since October, but consistently tabled as Horizon Lines and the City of Unalaska have worked to finalize the contract, which would give their vessel priority dock access. Council will consider a related resolution as new business later in the meeting.

There is one item on the consent agenda. A resolution would confirm the appointment of Unalaska City School teacher Aura Beatty to the library advisory committee.

During the new business portion of the meeting, council will again take up the PUA and then discuss mayor and council travel to the Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference's economic summit in February.

City council will wrap up in executive session, where they will discuss mediation over PCB contamination.

Council will meet in the City Hall chambers at 7pm. The meeting is expected to last approximately an hour.
