Council to Delve Into 2014 Budget

Tuesday, April 23 2013
City council will meet early tonight to start firming up its 2014 budget.
They’ll be asked to adopt a draft of the capital and major maintenance plan for fiscal years 2014 through 2018. The CMMP outlines major projects, including overhauls of three utility plants, and routine upgrades to city facilities. Over the next five years, the city will spend about $104 million on that work, with about $40 million in grant funding.
Council will also read through a draft of the 2014 operating budget. It’s set to increase by less than 1 percent next year. Council will also firm up the city’s financial commitments to Unalaska schools in 2014, along with grants to local nonprofit agencies.
They’ll hold a public hearing and second reading of a budget package. It would set aside $10 milllion to pave Ballyhoo Road, along with several city parking lots. It also covers paving at the Unalaska Marine Center. Council will vote on a $626,000 contract for the UMC paving with Northern Mechanical. A contract for maintenance and paving at the water plant is also up for consideration.
At the end of the meeting, council will go into executive session to discuss contract negotiations with Local 302, from the International Union of Operating Engineers. That union represents employees at City Hall and the departments of Parks, Culture, and Recreation, and Public Works and Utilities.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
