Council to discuss current and future budgets

Tuesday, April 12 2011

Unalaska, AK –
Tonight, city council will continue their discussion of the current and future budget.

The meeting will open with a public hearing on an ordinance that would create a budget amendment for housekeeping on a number of capital projects, including the upgrade of sewer lift station panels. The ordinance will make changes to the governmental, electric, water, wastewater, solid waste, and ports funds. However, no new funding for projects is being requested in this ordinance.

During the work session, the council will hear a presentation on the community support program, which provides funding for local non-profits. Because the amount of funding available for the community support program is formula driven, just over $790,000 is allocated for the coming year - a drop from last year. However, the requests from non-profits amount to nearly $960,000.

Nine non-profits applied for grants this year, all of which have previously received funding from the city. Among the groups asking for city funding are the Aleutian Arts Council, APIA, Iliuliuk Family and Health Services behavioral health services, the Museum of the Aleutians, the Qawalangin tribe culture camp, Unalaska Community Broadcasting, the Unalaska Convention and Visitors Bureau, Unalaska Senior Citizens, and USAFV.

Following the community support program report, council will hear presentations on the Carl E. Moses small boat harbor rates, "PILT" (or payment in lieu of taxes), and the road improvement master plan. Council will also receive an update on the installation of a third engine at the powerhouse.

During the regular session, council will review one item on the consent agenda. A resolution would confirm the mayor's appointment of fire chief Andrew Palmeri to the IFHS board of directors. In the unfinished business portion of the meeting, council will vote on the budget ordinance discussed during public hearing

The council has two items of new business. Council will discuss mayor travel for the Alaska Municipal League conference held in Anchorage this May. Then, they will move into executive session to discuss legal action involving the Environmental Protection Agency.

The meeting will start at 7pm in City Hall Council Chambers and is expected to last two hours.
