Council to discuss small boat harbor in special meeting

Thursday, December 17 2009
Unalaska, AK – The city council is meeting Saturday morning to review the status of the Carl E. Moses Boat Harbor project. Mayor Shirley Marquardt said the council will get an overview of where the project is right now and what issues or challenges the city still needs to overcome to get the project moving forward. One of the major issues is funding. The Army Corps of Engineers is still seeking funding to finish the outer breakwaters, however Marquardt said that this boat harbor is their first priority when they do get more money from the federal government.
The council will also review the potential costs for building the inner harbor before they go forward with awarding a contract to the potential builders, PND Engineering and Pacific Pile and Marine. They'll discuss funding sources as well, because it will cost more than originally anticipated.
The council, and any members of the public who attend, will learn more about the continuing public input process. The build and design firm already gathered input on the inner harbor design from stakeholders during the North Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting. They will continue that process here in Unalaska.
The meeting starts at 9 am on Saturday in the City Council Chambers.
