Council to Take Final Action on Rezoning Requests

Tuesday, July 09 2013

Two proposals to rezone commercial property for residential use are on the city council’s agenda for this evening. Tonight’s vote is the final step in the rezoning process for the properties, which are respectively owned by Coe and Phyllis Whittern and the Ounalashka Corporation. If the changes are approved, the properties could hold up to 60 new housing units, although only a fraction of that number are planned for the immediate future.

Also on the agenda is the appointment of a new member to the city’s planning commission. Mayor Shirley Marquardt is recommending Doanh Tran for the seat vacated in May by Chris Spengler. The commission has five members, who make decisions about platting and advise the city council on proposed development.

Finally, the council will address some technical errors in the recently-adopted fiscal year 2014 budget. City council voted on an outdated budget document during their May meeting -- the revision fixes line items in the planning department’s budget and housing proprietary fund. It also removes asset purchases under $50,000 from the capital budget, and includes them in the operating budget. Interim city finance director Karl Swanson says that, along with a shift in how capital projects using proprietary funds are accounted for, will allow for better cash flow monitoring.

Council meets at 7pm in City Hall.
