Council to try again to appoint interim member tonight
Monday, December 03 2007
Unalaska, AK – The Unalaska City Council will meet for a special session this evening to try once again to pick an interim replacement for Rocky Caldero's seat.
An attempt to do so last week fell apart after a partial council voted 3-1 in favor of appointing Kris Flanagan, who lost his own seat in the October election. Because three votes is not the majority of the full council, the motion ended in a stalemate.
Dick Peck cast the one vote against appointing Flanagan. He said at the time that he thought the decision should wait for councilmember Katherine McGlashan, who was not present for the meeting.
Peck also said he questioned the wisdom of appointing somebody who the voters had chosen not to reelect in October. But if Flanagan receives the three votes he got last week at tonight's meeting, with five council members present, it will be enough to get him the seat.
The council meets at City Hall at 7 p.m. The new appointee will be sworn in tonight as well.
