Council To Vote on Budget Amendment

Tuesday, September 13 2011

Tonight, city council will convene to make decisions on budget and zoning items.

There will be public hearings on two ordinances at the top of the meeting. One ordinance would allow chiropractor Jim Morris to operate a clinic at toward the bottom of Haystack Hill in an area that’s presently a residential zone. The other would amend the budget so that the Department of Public Safety could accept drug forfeiture money and that the Unalaska Public Library could receive a Rasmuson grant for the expansion of their collection. Additionally, that ordinance would also increase the budget for the Ballyhoo Road Project and amend the budget for the new Carl E. Moses Small Boat Harbor. Both of these ordinances will be voted on in the unfinished business portion of the meeting.

Council will also review five items of new business. They will discuss one resolution that would allow the City Manager to enter into a $2.2 million agreement with Northern Mechanical for construction of the Ballyhoo Road Drainage and Electrical Improvement Project. They will also consider a resolution that would identify that project, the wastewater treatment plant project, and the installation a fourth engine at the powerhouse as their top priorities when lobbying the state of Alaska this year. The third resolution they will review would appropriate a still undetermined amount of money for a community reception during the upcoming North Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting. Additionally, an ordinance that would amend the budget for the city dock fender system repair project will be introduced. Lastly, council will also discuss covering the mayor’s hotel expenses at the upcoming Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference.

Two items are on the consent agenda. One would allow Leslie Swanson Zimmerman to serve on the Parks, Culture, and Recreation Advisory Committee and another would allow the appointment of judges and clerks for the October municipal election.

During the meeting, council will also make a proclamation recognizing suicide prevention and awareness month.

The meeting will convene in city hall council chambers at 7pm, and it is expected to last an hour and a half.
