Council to Weigh Contracts Supporting Capital Projects

Tuesday, December 23 2014

At their last meeting of the year, city council will review work contracts that tie into two major projects.

The first contract up for consideration at tonight's meeting is with Wolf Architecture. The Palmer-based firm has been selected to design renovations at the Aquatics Center. That project will eventually include a new sauna and family changing rooms.

Wolf Architecture was the lowest of four bidders on the design contract. They also received high scores from city staff.

Council will also look at a $264,000 agreement with PND Engineers to oversee construction at the Bobby Storrs Boat Harbor. The city has already hired Turnagain Marine Construction to build a new float.

In a memo to council, ports director Peggy McLaughlin says that staff asked two engineering firms to submit proposals for handling paperwork and inspecting construction at the harbor. PND Engineers came in below budget.

The contract that council will consider tonight only covers administration services. McLaughlin says inspections will be presented to council in a separate agreement down the road.

Travel is also on the agenda: Mayor Shirley Marquardt will seek approval to attend an Alaska Municipal League meeting in Juneau and a roundtable on Arctic waterways in British Columbia.

The meeting starts tonight at 6 p.m. in City Hall.
