Crane, loaders needed to pull garbage truck out of ditch

Unalaska, AK – It took a crane and two front-end loaders to rescue a garbage truck that slid off an icy road this morning.
Work crews from West Construction and Pacific Stevedoring were contracted to deal with the truck, which belongs to Williwaw Services, the company that services dumpsters in Unalaska. Chris Riley, Williwaw's onsite manager, said that one of his drivers was trying to get up the narrow, icy driveway leading from Dutton Road up to the Alaska Commercial Co. apartments when it happened.
"He made it almost to the top, spun out, went to come back down, and apparently it died and he ended up sliding off," Riley said. "It's so slick, you get anywhere near the edge of the road and you slide right off."
The truck was fully loaded with about 10,000 pounds of garbage when the accident happened, so getting it out of the ditch was no easy task. West Construction's crane lifted the back end of the vehicle into the air, while the two Pac Steve loaders pulled it uphill and back onto the road.
