Crew Members Aboard 2 Fishing Vessels Injured Sunday

The Department of Public Safety was called to help two injured crew members aboard fishing vessels in Unalaska on Sunday.

A crew member aboard the factory trawler Starbound was injured after the boat’s crane broke loose from its base and fell off the bow early Sunday morning.

Fire Chief Abner Hoage says the Starbound was offloading fish at the North Pacific Fuel dock when the crane fell.

The injured crew member was taken via ambulance to the clinic. Hoage couldn’t release any further details on the injuries in that case.

Later on Sunday, the F/V Aleutian Lady came into the Coast Guard dock with a crew member who had a compound leg fracture. Hoage says the man had been injured nine hours earlier while the boat was out fishing.

The crew member was transported to the clinic and later medevacked to Anchorage.

Hoage says Public Safety generally sees many more ambulance and medevac calls during the major fishing seasons. He says serious injuries like compound fractures are uncommon but not unheard of aboard fishing vessels.
