Cruise Ship to Pay Easter Visit to Unalaska

Friday, April 06 2012

If you’re hoping to buy plain plastic Easter eggs this weekend, good luck. The Unalaska Convention and Visitor’s Bureau may have bought them all out in anticipation of their busiest day in years.

The Crystal Serenity, a jumbo-sized luxury cruise ship, is expected to come in this weekend for a longer port call than usual, and the schedule change is forcing the CVB to get a little bit creative.

“Okay, 7am … on Easter Sunday … 500 people … go!” laughs Alyssa Sensky, who works for the CVB. “What can I do on Easter Sunday with 500 people?”

An Easter egg hunt and a historical tour, to name just a couple of things. Sensky says that she’s never had to deal with that number of people during her tenure, and that Unalaska often doesn’t get 500 visitors in a whole month. She adds that this figure doesn’t even include the 700-person crew aboard the 820-foot cruise ship, which is traveling from Tokyo to Los Angeles and costing its passengers a minimum of $12,000 a head.

Sensky says that the tourists will probably be all over town that day, riding in taxis to local business and stopping by various events. So, don’t be surprised to see them at Alaska Ship Supply or the Resurrection Dance. Sensky adds that she hopes that the community will be welcoming to the visitors.

“If you see them, please give them a warm hello. If they look lost, offer direction, because it’s a great thing for our community,” says Sensky. “It’s 500 people, extra, in one day!”
