Darrell Sanborn is Alaska's Superintendent of the Year

Unalaska, AK – Unalaska City School District Superintendent Darrell Sanborn is Alaska's superintendent of the year for the 2006-2007 school year. A selection committee made up of six educational associations and the state Chamber of Commerce nominated Sanborn, who said he was humbled by the award.
Sanborn came to Unalaska in 2000 from Kotzebue, where he was assistant superintendent in the Northwest Arctic Borough School District. He's been with the Unalaska district longer than the three previous superintendents combined.
The honor was conferred by the Alaska Association of School Administrators. AASA Executive Director Mary Francis said that many members of the community of Unalaska wrote in to recommend Sanborn.
According to Francis, one of the things that stuck out in particular to the selection committee was Sanborn's commitment to giving one-on-one attention to students. Sanborn says that comes out of his experience in areas of education that require a personal touch, such as special education.
In March, Sanborn will represent Alaska at the American Association of School Administrators' annual conference in New Orleans, where he'll be considered for national superintendent of the year.
