Despite Weather Problems, Community Gathers for Memorial Day Remembrance

Tuesday, May 29 2012

About a hundred Unalaska residents braved brisk weather to remember lost fishermen, veterans, and loved ones at Memorial Park on Monday.

The Memorial Day ceremony was a somber one, and it honored those who served in the military and more. Particular attention was given to the service the Coast Guard provides in the Aleutian region. Marine Safety Detachment supervisor Derek Gibson provided a history of the Bering Sea patrol, as flags whipped in the wind.

The memorial also honored the fishermen who work and have lost their lives in Alaska waters. Alexander Berikoff recited a poem the risk and sacrifice that comes with commercial fishing, all before joining Unalaska’s boy scout troop in placing a wreath on the Fishermen’s Memorial.

The service also provided an opportunity to remember people connected to the community who had recently passed away. Toward the end of the ceremony, Mayor Shirley Marquardt read a list of people who had lived and worked in the community who died in just the past year, while Ballyhoo Lions Club member Dan Masoni rang a bell after each name.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony usually attracts a good segment of the community, but this year the high turnout was especially impressive because of the day's extreme weather conditions. The service had initally been scheduled for the morning, but was rescheduled for the afternoon because of sleet and strong winds.
