Divers take Halloween festivities underwater this weekend

Unalaska, AK – Halloween is nearly upon us, and in honor of the holiday, the Unalaska Diver's Association is hosting its first annual underwater pumpkin carving contest this Sunday.

Local diver Brandon Hunter said that's pretty much exactly what it sounds like.

"Most people tend to hollow their pumpkin out above water," he said. "And then using whatever tools you have available, you take the pumpkin underwater and carve it up."

Underwater carving contests are popular with dive clubs in other parts of the country, but this is the first time anyone's done it in Unalaska. Hunter said the icy waters of the Bering Sea will make things a little more interesting than they would be in, say, the Florida Keys.

"Most places don't do this in as cold water as we have, so they're not dealing with the numb fingers, the really thick gloves and everything," he said.

Hunter said that so far about half a dozen people have said they're going to participate. The divers are meeting at the Goose ramp by the airport at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
