DMV altering hours to offer CDL road tests

Friday, June 03 2011

Unalaska, AK – The Unalaska DMV office is altering its hours to accommodate expanding testing requirements for commercial drivers. That's because a new state requirement now requires a road test for existing commercial drivers.

"Locally, there used to be an exception to (commercial drivers license) laws that allowed commercial drivers to have what's called an off-system CDL," explained Jamie Sunderland, director of the Unalaska Department of Public Safety. "Those are all expiring at the end of September."

In anticipation for high demand the DMV will be giving CDL road tests on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. That means all other DMV business will have to be conducted on Mondays and Fridays. Sunderland says that's sure to be an inconvenience for some.

"That's going to cause I'm sure some issues," he said. "But we're trying to accommodate everybody."

The DMV is now scheduling appointments for CDL road tests. The local office's number is 581-2833. The deadline to upgrade a CDL is September 30.
