Drug charges still standing

Unalaska, AK – Legal action against all of the individuals arrested in April and May for drug related charges is still proceeding. Many of the cases were heard before a grand jury and though some of the charges changed slightly, none of the cases were dropped. Director of Public Safety Jamie Sunderland said that the evidence collected by the undercover officer is still valid in a court of law and all of the defendants are still being prosecuted for various charges, including selling drugs. He said an article in the Dutch Harbor Fishermen led some people to believe otherwise.
"What was in the paper was really one set of charges going away, but they didn't show the other half, that they're all still indicted on multiple felonies. I believe that some people may be under the mistaken impression that those charges are all gone and nothing happened. But that isn't the case. They're still under indictment with multiple felonies," he explained.
Included among those who were indicted for selling drugs are JoAnn Lee and Cameron Hutchins. Most of the defendants have been released on bail and are awaiting hearings and trials. Sunderland said the legal work could take up to a year and a half.
Three individuals left the island before they could be arrested. Daniel Ejigu and Gerald Wilson still have warrants out for their arrests. Michael Schneider turned himself in while in Anchorage and was later released on bail.
