Dutch Harbor bombing revisted
Monday, June 02 2008
Unalaska, AK – Tonight marks the 66th anniversary of eve of the bombing of Dutch Harbor during World War II. Local historian Jeff Dickrell will give a slideshow presentation of the bombing--a blow by blow account that's geared towards locals.
"For instance, last year all the state workers who were working on the bridge came and hated it because they didn't recognize anything. They had just arrived," he said. "Then a month later, I saw them all and they're like 'Woah, that was cool! Now we see when you talked about this or the other thing ' After they learned town a little bit."
The lecture includes photos from before, during, and after the war and information from veterans' narratives and physical evidence in Dutch Harbor. Dickrell says the ever present physical evidence of the attack inspired him to research it further.
"I grew up in the Midwest in a town that had all of its history paved over," he recalled. In Dutch Harbor, it's different.
"I found a map of where the bombs hit, jumped on my bike rode over above the airport, found a couple craters, poked around and pulled out some Japanese bomb shrapnel. You can't really do that in Illinois."
A veteran who arrived in Dutch Harbor on the eve of the attack, Lloyd Adams, will also be at the talk. The lecture begins at 7:30 pm in the high school auditorium and will run about two hours. Admission is free.
