Eagle attacks reported near Dutch Harbor post office

Unalaska, AK – Two women reported being attacked by bald eagles Monday morning in separate attacks less than two hours apart. Both women were struck by eagles nesting near the Dutch Harbor post office. Bald eagles are nesting this time of year and very sensitive to humans. Wildlife
Trooper Sgt. Robin Morrisett says his office fielded calls following the incident.
"People need to be aware that this is the time that eagles do sit on nests," Morrisett said. "People just need to stay vigilant about their surroundings and the birds flying in the air."
It's not the first time eagles have struck people in the community. Last July there was a spate of attacks by nesting eagles. Known trouble spots are both the Dutch Harbor and Unalaska post offices as well as Captains Bay Road between the Westward Seafood plant and the bridge.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokesman Bruce Woods in Anchorage says federal biologists visited Unalaska last summer to try and find solutions.
Because of federal protections on eagles there are few legal ways to move nesting birds. Woods says his agency's advice is for people to be extra aware where eagles are nesting.
"If you see eagles and they're beginning to act disturbed the best thing to do is to not bolt but just move a little further away from them," Woods said.
Both attacks were before noon. The Unalaska Department of Public Safety says it has posted warning signs in known trouble spots.
