Eagle's View Elementary Awaits Blue Ribbon Results

Friday, September 20 2013
By the end of the month, Eagle’s View Elementary School should find out whether it’s won a national Blue Ribbon award for outstanding performance. The school was nominated last winter -- just three years after the high school won a Blue Ribbon.
But at Thursday's school board meeting, superintendent John Conwell said he doesn’t expect the elementary school to get the award this year. Conwell’s said he’s still digging through the numbers, but he thinks a drop in reading scores might affect Eagle’s View’s latest application.
Another factor in the application: Whether a school is meeting yearly benchmarks laid out by the No Child Left Behind Act. Alaska recently switched to its own scoring and ranking system after receiving a waiver from No Child Left Behind. Conwell says it’s not clear how the Blue Ribbon administrators are weighing that change when they consider Alaska schools.
