Early reports: low turnout for Unalaska primary

Tuesday, August 22 2006
Unalaska, AK – Turnout has been low in Unalaska today for House District 37's first competitive Democratic primary in years.
Incumbent Representative Carl Moses of Unalaska has his first Democratic primary competitor in six years in today's election. Moses is being challenged by his former staffer and Bristol Bay Economic Development Corporation CEO Bryce Edgmon of Dillingham. While the race has sparked higher than usual voter turnout in Dillingham, turnout has been lackluster in Unalaska so far.
As of 4 p.m. this afternoon, only 180 votes had been cast in Unalaska, and 14 absentee ballots had been collected, for a precinct with 1,534 registered voters. By contrast, in Dillingham, which has a comparable number of registered voters to Unalaska, about 150 absentee ballots alone had been filed.
Speaking at about 3:30 this afternoon, City Clerk Debra Mack said she hoped turnout would improve over the rest of the day.
Moses was first elected to the state house in 1964 and has held his current seat since 1990. The last time he faced a challenge in the Democratic primary was in 2000, when he beat Agnes Rychnovsky with 66 percent of the vote.
Polls are open at Unalaska City Hall until 8 p.m. tonight. Tune in to KIAL AM 1450 for APRN's live election coverage from 9 p.m. until midnight, including live updates from Unalaska.
