Electricity cut off to Harbor Crown

Thursday, June 25 2009

Unalaska, AK – KUCB obtained an email from a city official saying that Harbor Crown Seafoods is in debt to the city for about $200,000 for their electric bills and had the power to the plant shut off. They have not paid their electric bills in full for the last six months. Harbor Crown's Unalaska office is closed for the summer and no one at their corporate office could be reached for comment.

City staff cannot comment on private customers' utility bills, however director of utilities Dan Winters did say that electricity is only cut off if a customer does not pay the bill for a long period and does not develop a payment plan or if a customer is in violation of a national electric code. At present, Winters operates the electric utility with about a $300,000 buffer zone. A loss of revenue below that amount will not affect other customers, but if another large industry goes off line, rates could be impacted. Winters said when the electric utility is owed a significant amount of money they sometimes try to get the money back by legal means.
