End of Coastal Zone Management Program to affect Unalaska

Unalaska, AK – This weekend, Alaska's legislature wrapped up after an extended legislative session. But despite having the extra time, the state's politicians couldn't manage to come up with an agreement to keep the Coastal Zone Management Program going.

The Coastal Zone Management Program gives communities local input on nearby coastal projects. A compromise measure that would have extended the program failed by one vote. The program will now sunset on June 30.

City manager Chris Hladick explains what that means for Unalaska.

"It means there's one less step to go through for a project, but at the same the Coastal Zone Management program allowed for local input," says City Manager Chris Hladick. "You got notification of every project that was going on through them, and it was just a lot better coordination, I think."

While the legislature did not succeed in extending the Coastal Zone Management Program, they did agree upon a capital budget. Three projects for Unalaska were included. The legislature has set state funding for a new water treatment plant at $3.1 million, along with $4.0 million for a new wastewater treatment plant. The legislature has also allotted $25.7 million for airport repaving.

Now, the budget goes to the governor's office for approval.
