Few Candidates for Unalaska Election as Deadline Looms

Friday, August 15 2014
The deadline to file as a candidate in Unalaska’s municipal election is coming up next Friday, Aug. 22 – and so far, the race is wide open.
There are two city council seats up for election this year – seat B, currently held by Dennis Robinson, and seat E, held by Zoya Johnson. Both of their three-year terms expire this fall.
There are also three school board seats on the ballot this year – they’re currently held by Cathy Jordan, Denise Rankin and Fernando Barrera.
As of Friday afternoon, Aug. 15, City clerk Cat Hazen said only Zoya Johnson had filed to run for her current city council seat this year.
Hazen said Cathy Jordan and Fernando Barrera have picked up paperwork to run for their current seats, but neither has officially filed yet. The other incumbents haven’t indicated whether they’ll run.
Anyone interested in running for the open seats can stop by city hall between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The deadline to file is 5 p.m. next Friday. Unalaska’s municipal election is on Oct. 7.
