Few Candidates Set to Run For Local Office

Monday, August 12 2013
With just three days to file for candidacy, few people have stepped up to run in October’s municipal elections.
Three spots on city council, three school board seats, and the mayor’s office are all on the ballot. So far, several incumbents have filed for candidacy: Mayor Shirley Marquardt and city councilors Roger Rowland, Alejandro “Bong” Tungul and Dave Gregory are all running unopposed.
There are no contested races for the Unalaska school board, either. Abner Hoage is running unopposed for seat C, which he has held since February. Tammy Fowler Pound is seeking re-election to seat D, and Fernando Barrera is running for seat E, which was vacated by Sonia Handforth-Kome.
The deadline to file for candidacy is Thursday, August 15 at 5 p.m. The elections will be held on October 1.
CORRECTION: Fernando Barrera and Abner Hoage are running for separate seats on Unalaska's school board -- not the same seat, as the City Clerk's office told KUCB. No races are currently contested.
A Happy Day on Monday, August 12 2013:
Everyone must be content and happy with the status quo! Congrats; you're all doing a swell job!
