Filipino pop stars perform in Unalaska Sunday

Unalaska, AK – With its small population and enormous distance from pretty much anywhere else, Unalaska isn't on most musicians' itineraries. But this Sunday will be the exception to that rule: a group of Filipino pop stars has diverted its American tour from Anchorage to Unalaska.
Kuh Ledesma and Pops Fernandez are the headlining acts. Ledesma is a popular singer in the Philippines, and Fernandez is a movie star and TV talk show host. They'll be joined by comedian Chokoleit and singer Eric Santos for a variety show called Kuh & Pops at the Movies. Ledesma said it will combine a little bit of all of their work.
"Pops and myself have had many shows in Manila together," she said. "It's been very successful, that's why we decided to tour it. So what we do is take the best parts of our shows and put them in one show like this."
Rose Hook, who runs Unalaska's Little Manila store, is putting on the concert. She said she's proud to be the first person to produce a show of this size here on the island.
"This is the first time that they're going to come to Dutch Harbor, and also this is the first time we're going to have a show like this--a concert," she said.
Hook said she hopes to bring more Filipino artists to perform in Unalaska. Fernandez said that, after seeing what it's like for Filipinos in Unalaska to be so far from home, she agrees.
"Being here for just a couple of days, it kind of makes us miss the Philippines," Fernandez said. "So can you imagine our fellow Filipinos [who live] here? So it would be kind of nice if this is actually the beginning of a series of shows that would be coming in here."
"Kuh & Pops at the Movies" will be 7 p.m. Sunday night at the Unalaska High School gym. Advance tickets can be bought from Rose Hook at Little Manila Asian Foods and Groceries, at 581-5503.
