Films about Unalaska get Emmy nod

Unalaska, AK – A series of short films about life in Unalaska received an Emmy nomination this year. The series, called The Real Dutch, was produced in conjunction with Deadliest Catch for the Discovery Channel and included interviews with every one from police officers to bartenders to local DJs. Director, editor, and producer Vanessa Serreo said they wanted to show fans of the TV show what life was really like here.

"We wanted to show that there was more to the town than just the port and the crabbing industry and to show how the crabbing industry affected the rest of the town," she said. "So we just thought about who the key people in the town were and what kind of people gave the town it's flavor. We tried to do a good cross section of people."

The piece she entered for the Emmy competition featured Dave Gregory pulling up crab pots in his small fishing boat. Serreo said she enjoyed filming the piece because it was so active. She also enjoyed the diversity of the community.

"I guess I might have been expecting more one type of person -that independent Alaska person," she said. "But then, when I got there, everyone was so different from each other. It seemed like there was a really diverse population on that island. Which was amazing."

She said she was surprised at how easily people accepted major delays. She and her crew were stuck in the Anchorage airport for two days, so they took the opportunity to ask people how it felt and make another film about it.

After much preparation, Serreo attended the arts Emmys last week. "I took a really long time to find a dress because I'm six and a half months pregnant," she said, laughing.

The show did not win the Emmy; it went to a History Channel series on political campaigns instead.
