Firefighters fight downtown blaze

Unalaska, AK – The Department of Public Safety's firefighters were able to extinguish a fire at a home on Bayview Road near the Holy Ascension Orthodox Cathedral Sunday morning, but weren't able to save several pets that were trapped in the residence.

Both of Public Safety's fire engines and its ladder truck were dispatched to the fire late Sunday morning at a home belonging to Barry Fredricks. Firefighter Mike Sheffield said that his team had four firefighters at a time in the house, working to contain the blaze.

Sheffield said one room of the house was badly burned, but the damage to the rest of the structure was limited to smoke and heat.

Sadly, firefighters weren't able to rescue the three dogs and two cats that were inside when the fire broke out.

"We found the dogs early on, and did what we could. We actually tried to resuscitate them, without success," Sheffield said.

No other buildings were damaged by the blaze. Although no cause has been identified yet, Sheffield said Public Safety has determined that the fire was accidental.
