Fisherman still missing a month after disappearance

Unalaska, AK – It has now been over a month since fisherman John F. Courage has gone missing, and the Unalaska Department of Public Safety is still working to determine his whereabouts.

Courage, age 56, was last seen on December 29. He had been conducting boat watch aboard the F/V Alaska Trojan when he disappeared. His personal belongings, including his wallet and identification, were left in a stateroom, but his survival suit was missing from the vessel. That suit was later found floating in the Iliuliuk South Channel.

Flyers with Courage's information have been posted around Unalaska, and his name has now been posted in a state and national missing persons database. A week ago, the Department of Public Safety and the Alaska State Troopers pooled resources to conduct a perimeter search of Captains Bay and Little South America for any signs of Courage's whereabouts. Divers have also searched Captains Bay near the Crowley Dock, where the Alaska Trojan was moored. Police have also interviewed Courage's acquaintances to see if he has been in touch.

Sgt. Matt Betzen with the Unalaska Department of Public says that right now, there are two likely scenarios.

"The options appear to be that he's either left, in which case it's not against the law at all to choose to drop off the face of the Earth and leave," says Betzen. "Or, that he is deceased, in which case there aren't a whole lot of leads, especially in rural Alaska where it can be difficult to locate you after you're deceased."

Betzen adds that search efforts are expected to continue in the immediate future.

"At some point, we're going to stop looking," says Betzen. "We haven't reached that point, and I don't know when that points will be."

Courage was last seen at Alaska Ship Supply wearing a red shirt, a black jacket, and jeans.
