Four Contractors Bid on Wastewater Treatment Plant

Tuesday, April 30 2013
Unalaska’s new wastewater treatment plant will cost at least $19 million dollars. The city received four bids for the project. Public works director Nancy Peterson opened them at a public bid hearing Tuesday afternoon.
“The apparent low bidder for this project is Alaska Mechanical at $19,270,000," Peterson told the assembled crowd.
Alaska Mechanical Inc is based in Anchorage, and is currently under contract to the city for leachate management at the landfill.
The high bidder was Anchorage-based UIC Construction at $28,469,559, followed by MKB Constructors out of Kirkland, Washington at $23,394,442 and SKW Eskimos at $21,127,849.
City staff will review the bids for accuracy and completeness, and then make a recommendation to city council.
Common sense on Wednesday, May 01 2013:
Err- you would think the highest bid the most realistic. Just take a look at other bid results and accompanied change orders and revisions that always seem to drive up the final costs of these projects. Usually, you get what you pay for.
