Golden Seas regains power

Unalaska, AK – The cargo ship Golden Seas has regained some power according to the Coast Guard. The vessel had been drifting southward toward Atka Island in the Western Aleutians after its main engine failed.
Power was regained at approximately 4pm. There was concern that the 738-foot vessel could run aground on Adak or Atka, but the captain has recovered control of the vessel and is now able to steer.
"They have steerage way of just a few knots, but it's enough for them to keep themselves from grounding. We are still closely monitoring the situation," says Jennifer Whitcomb, a search and rescue controller.
The Coast Guard cutters Alex Haley and Spar are still en route to assist the Golden Seas, along with two Coast Guard helicopters and a C-130 aircraft. The Shell-operated icebreaker Tor Viking is also joining the Golden Seas and is expected to tow or accompany the vessel to Dutch Harbor.
The Golden Seas lost power around 10pm last night while located 70 miles north of Adak, according to Chief Petty Officer Dana Warr. The vessel was traveling from Canada to the United Arab Emirates and carrying a shipment of rapeseeds, used to make Canola oil.
