Unalaska, AK – On Wednesday, Gov. Sean Parnell released his preliminary budget, which the state legislature will use as a starting point for discussion. The budget lists two items for Unalaska.

Included in the budget is $25.7 million in expected federal funding for airport maintenance. That project involves pavement rehabilitation and improvements to the runway safety area.

The governor's budget also includes over $3 million for the water treatment plant, which would come from the state's general fund. That project is estimated to cost $6 million, and must move ahead because of EPA compliance rules.

Assistant City Manager John Fulton says heis pleased with the budget, especially given that the governor did not include any capital projects for Unalaska in the previous year's budget. However, there is one major project that he wishes had received attention.

"We were hoping for some money for our wastewater treatment plant," says Fulton. "That's a very expensive project heading down our way, and that's also an EPA regulation that we're having to me."

The total budget is $1.5 billion, with $835 million coming from the federal government. The budget is subject to change during the legislative session, which opens in January.
