Gregory picks up votes from Bobbitt, Flanagan to win runoff

Unalaska, AK – Preliminary results from Monday's election show David Gregory defeating Randall Baker by a wide margin in the runoff for City Council Seat D.

Gregory received 345 votes, or 69.4 percent of the total ballots cast. Baker, who led Gregory in the four-way regular election last month, received less than half of that, with 152 votes and 30.6 percent.

The runoff results amounted to a leap from behind for Gregory, who picked up 39 votes less than Baker in the October 2 general election. Baker, on the other hand, received about 100 fewer votes this time around.

Baker chose not to comment on Monday's election. Gregory said he had been expecting to pick up voters who had cast their ballots for the other two candidates, incumbent D.H. "Kris" Flanagan and challenger Chris Bobbitt, in the general election.

"I think three of us split up the votes, and I think I got most of those votes in the second election--I feel like I was ahead the whole time," Gregory said.

Last month Baker filed a challenge over the general election results, alleging that a large number of unqualified voters had cast ballots on October 2. City officials investigated the claim and found no evidence of wrongdoing.

Baker said at the time he was considering further legal action against the city, but now he says that probably won't happen, because of the cost of filing suit and because he hasn't been able to persuade enough people to come forward to file a class action suit. But he says he is still looking for evidence of voter misconduct that could be presented to the Alaska Public Offices Commission.

Gregory will succeed incumbent Flanagan, who came in third in last month's election for his City Council seat. Gregory will be stepping down from his seat on the city's planning and zoning committee and taking his position on the council starting at next Tuesday's meeting.
