Guilty plea in drug bust case

Unalaska, AK – Another case related to last year's drug bust was resolved this morning.
John Bruce, Jr., 26, pleaded guilty to the manufacture of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to five years in prison, and three years probation. Two and a half years of his jail sentence have been suspended.
As part of the plea agreement, two other charges - including the more serious count of distribution to a minor - were dropped.
The charges stem from a drug bust that occurred last April, where undercover officers determined that Bruce was dealing Oxycontin. Fifteen others were arrested as part of that sweep.
Both the presiding judge, Steve Cole, and the public defender, David Mallet, had sympathetic words for Bruce. The two commented on the progress Bruce had made since his arrest, and how they were also impressed by the support he had received from his father, John Bruce, Sr. Cole even remarked that he did not expect to see Bruce in his court again, unless it was for jury duty.
"Someone really at first blush can look at this and say this really is a severe - a harsh - sentence," says Cole. "If I didn't have the legal restrictions placed upon me, I certainly would have thought about giving a less harsh sentence here."
Taxi driver Joanne Lee, 60, also pleaded guilty to drug-related offenses last month.
