Health group to focus on suicide prevention

Thursday, June 23 2011

A pair of suicide prevention counselors is in Unalaska offering training workshops to adults and teenagers. The specialists from the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium have been holding sessions this week with about 18 community members of different ages participating. They are discussing ways to recognize warning signs and find ways to engage peers who might be at-risk.

Hillary Strayer is an injury prevention specialist with ANTHC. She’s traveled to about a half-dozen communities to discuss suicide prevention and says that in recent days she’s heard many concerns.

The two-day session wraps up Friday. But Strayer would like to hold a shorter session on Saturday if there’s enough interest. The workshop, called SafeTALK will need at least 10 participants to proceed.

“It’s open for everyone,” says Strayer. “The SafeTALK is intended to focus on being able to tell someone if you’re at risk for suicide.”

Those interested are asked to RSVP as soon as possible by calling 581-2751 and leave a message. The session will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 25 at the Oonalaska Wellness Center on Broadway Avenue. There is no charge.
