High Winds Damage Cargo Crane

Operations are on hold at the City Dock after high winds damaged the only working crane for loading cargo.
Ports director Peggy McLaughlin says the crane was being moved Friday morning to accommodate an incoming Horizon Lines container ship. A gust of wind caught the machinery and slammed the crane against its emergency stops.
"It hit it pretty good and there’s some obvious repair work that needs to be done to that end of the crane where the stops were," McLaughlin says. "There was a little bit of visible damage on the crane."
The dock is a city-owned facility -- except for the crane, which belongs to Horizon Lines. Local terminal manager Jennifer Tungul referred all questions to Horizon’s corporate office.
Horizon will be responsible for inspecting the equipment and assessing any damage.
"Right now, the crane is positioned over a section of crane rail that we would like to visually inspect and just have the engineers look over -- to make sure everything is kosher," McLaughlin says.
As of Friday evening, there was no plan in place for unloading Horizon's ship. The vessel was carrying a regular delivery of mail and groceries when it pulled up to the City Dock. And while Horizon used to keep a second crane at the facility, McLaughlin says that machinery's in the process of being demolished.
