Unalaska’s canvass committee met Friday in city hall to review absentee and contested ballots and come up with final results from last week’s municipal election

Roger Rowland held onto city council seat C in a close race with write-in candidate Katherine Labert. Rowland received about 53 percent of the votes while write-in candidates -- including Labert -- received 47 percent of the vote. Two-hundred and ten ballots were cast for Rowland. There were 183 write-ins.

Fernando Barrera won the election for seat E on Unalaska's school board. Barrera received 229 votes, or 57.1 percent. Denise Rankin received 171 votes, or or 42.6 percent of the vote. There was one write-in ballot cast in that race.

The committee also firmed up the results of uncontested races for city council and school board. In the election for mayor, incumbent Shirley Marquardt received 346 votes, or 89 percent of the vote. There were 41 write-ins, which accounted for about 11 percent of all ballots cast for mayor.

Dave Gregory received 359 votes for city council seat D and there were 17 write-ins for his seat. And Alejandro Tungul was elected to keep city council seat F, to which he was appointed this spring. Tungul got 348 votes. There were 25 write-in ballots cast for his seat.

School board member Abner Hoage received 339 votes. There were 12 write-ins in that election. And school board president Tammy Fowler Pound received 358 votes, with five write-in ballots cast for her seat.
