Increasing boat harbor price up for council approval

Tuesday, March 09 2010
Unalaska, AK – The city council will approve the final budget for the Carl E. Moses Boat harbor Tuesday night. The price of the new facility, including the inner harbor, the road, and a drive down dock, just bounced up another $4.6 million to a total of $43.7 million. The council used a preliminary estimate when designating funds at their previous meeting. The second reading of the ordinance will include this increase as well as an increase in the amount budgeted for the community center expansion project. The council originally set aside $2.2 million to increase the size and facilities of the PCR. Now the cost estimate is up to $3.96 million.
The city does have enough money for the projects in their reserve funds. However, using those funds will decrease the interest earnings that feed the general fund and could affect the yearly budget.
The city also plans on accepting a grant for $3.7 million from the state government to build new employee and teacher housing. The city will only contribute $1.7 million to the construction of the new 8-plex at the site of the current city trailers.
The council meeting starts Tuesday at 7 pm at city hall and is expected to last about an hour and a half.
