Infrastructure upgrades underway

Unalaska, AK – Two new maintenance projects are now underway in Unalaska.

Starting today, the Department of Public Utilities will be adjusting the generator governors at the powerhouse.

"The job consists of Wartsila technicians coming in and hooking computers up to our electronic system for the governors," says Public Utilities director Dan Winters.

He says that these adjustments should result in better service to the community.

"This means better performance on the grid and less power outages and less brownouts," says Winters.

This project is expected to wrap up on Wednesday. The Department of Public Utilities does not anticipate service interruptions during these three days. The next powerhouse project Public Utilities plans to take on is the installation of a third engine. That's slated for July.

Meanwhile, UniSea is also conducting work on the outfall pipes and ensuring they comply with Environmental Protection Agency regulations. According to human resources director Chris Plaisance, UniSea is contracting through Magone Marines Services to remove and replace the current Quad Lines that discharge into Unalaska Bay. They will also be removing a set of abandoned outfall lines. The work is scheduled to be completed by June 1, a little over a week before pollock B season begins.
