Little Sitkin Alert Level Lowered

Friday, January 11 2013

An Aleutian volcano that looked like it might blow earlier this year has stopped rumbling. An earthquake swarm in August at Little Sitkin volcano, near the end of the chain, had scientists on high alert for further activity. But after months of decreasing seismicity, on Wednesday, the Alaska Volcano Observatory downgraded Little Sitkin’s alert level to green or “normal.”

The nearest community to the normally quiet volcano is 200 miles away, but as with many Aleutian volcanoes, an eruption at Little Sitkin could cause problems for international air travel. The Observatory also downgraded the alert level for Iliamna Volcano in Cook Inlet, but Cleveland Volcano, near Nikolski, remains at alert level yellow.
