Local EVOS plaintiff reacts to settlement delays

Unalaska, AK – Plaintiffs in the Exxon Valdez oil spill case are waiting for yet another court decision before receiving settlement checks from Exxon Mobile. Nineteen years after the worst oil spill in U.S. history, former Prince William Sound fish processor, Sea Hawk Seafoods of Valdez wants a new allocation plan. A federal court judge will make a decision on the case some time this week.

Local plaintiff Forrest Bowers said Sea Hawk had plenty of time during the initial filing to make claims and shouldn't be delaying the process now. Though it won't make a huge difference for him, "for other people who may have retired out of the fishery and some people who have even passed away, I think it's unfortunate that those plaintiffs are having to put up with this," he said.

Bowers was a crew member on a commercial salmon boat when the oil spill occurred. If courts rule that Exxon must pay the full $500 million, he will get about $12,000. After lawyers fees are deducted, individual settlements range from nothing to about $400,000.
