A local man was arrested on charges of driving under the influence after police say he crashed a company truck near Memorial Park in Unalaska on Friday.

Thirty-year-old Kyle Eby was driving a Ford pickup down Summer Bay Road toward the landfill Friday afternoon when he swerved off the road and rolled over into the water.

Arnold Betancourt says he witnessed the crash as leaving the landfill.

"I saw the truck just coming, like a little speeding, there," he said as he stood near the crash scene on Friday. "And then I saw it just flip over right there, then I saw it just go on straight into the ocean."

Betancourt says he thinks there were two people in the truck. But deputy police chief Mike Holman says they aren’t sure yet whether Eby was driving alone.

"That’s what one of the witnesses says, but there’s some confliction [sic] in another witness’s statement," Holman says. "So we’re unsure."

Eby refused medical treatment at the scene. Police then gave him a field sobriety test, which he failed.

Eby allegedly admitted to having smoked marijuana earlier in the day. Police recovered marijuana at the scene, along with another substance they haven’t identified yet.

Eby was allegedly working at the time of the accident -- the truck he was driving belongs to Northern Mechanical, according to depupty chief Holman. The vehicle was totaled, and some equipment it was carrying was damaged, too. Total damages are estimated around $16,000.

Police arrested Eby on Friday and charged him with driving under the influence and possession of marijuana. He posted bail over the weekend and will be arraigned Thursday in Unalaska District Court.
