Marquardt, Rowland, Baker lead in preliminary election results

Unalaska, AK – Results from Unalaska's three elections held today show a too-close-to-call mayor's race, a clear winner for one City Council race and a runoff for a deposed incumbent's seat in the other.
-In the mayor's race, incumbent Shirley Marquardt edged out challenger Shannon Morrison 265 to 258, with Katherine McGlashan trailing in third with 130 votes.
-Incumbent Roger Rowland defeated Valerie Lemus 335 to 232 to retain Seat C in the only decisive race of the day. Joanna Aldridge, who remained on the ballot although she dropped out of the race, received 68 votes.
- Randall Baker leads the pack for Seat D with 232 votes, followed by David Gregory with 192, incumbent Kris Flanagan with 141 and Chris Bobbitt with 82.
Those numbers mean at least one and possibly two races will be decided by runoff elections, which happens when no candidate tops 40 percent of the vote.
In the preliminary numbers for the mayor's race, Marquardt barely makes the cutoff with 40.4 percent. But with 42 absentee ballots still uncounted, it's possible that her lead might not hold, triggering a runoff against Shannon Morrison.
The race for Seat D will definitely go to a runoff between Randall Baker, who took 35.8 percent, and David Gregory, who garnered 29.6.
Absentee ballots will be counted on Friday, and the results will be certified at next Tuesday's city council meeting.
