Minor power outages affect city; repaired

Unalaska, AK – Unalaska experienced a brief power outage Sunday when a transformer went down at the power house. Utilities director Dan Winters said the casing on the 15 year old 35,000 volt transformers was rusted out on the top. Snow blew into it and caused two of the electric wires to short out and malfunction. Power went out first on the Amaknak side then about 20 minutes later to the entire community. The entire town lost power for about 20 minutes. Utility workers got power back up for the entire island after re-routing all of the electric flow to the other transformers. It's the first full power outage in four years. The power house crew repaired the damaged transformer on Tuesday and the Public Utilities Department is looking to replace the unit.
