Moses, Edgmon neck and neck in primary

Wednesday, August 23 2006

Unalaska, AK – Incumbent Carl Moses and challenger Bryce Edgmon are neck and neck in the Democratic primary for House District 37 as of noon Wednesday, with half the precincts in the district reporting. Moses enjoys a slight lead with 50.4 percent of the vote, or 496 ballots. Edgmon is trailing by just eight ballots with 488.

Eleven districts have reported so far and 11 remain, according to the state Division of Elections. Voting so far has been locally driven, with Bristol Bay voting for Edgmon, who lives in Dillingham, by a wide margin, and the Aleutian and the Pribilof Islands doing the same for Moses. This trend seems to favor Edgmon, because most of the unreported precincts are in his base of support.

Seven of the unreported precincts are in the Bristol Bay region or the Nushagak River valley, and just two of them are in the Aleutians and Pribilofs. The remaining two are on the Alaska Peninsula, which has broken more or less evenly so far.

The Division of Elections says it will probably have the rest of the numbers by this evening. So far, 33 absentee ballots have been tallied, 13 for Moses and 20 for Edgmon.

Moses declined to speak about the state of the race this morning, and Edgmon was unavailable for comment.

The Republican primary is still up in the air as well. Ron Bowers has 169 votes so far, followed by Joe Faith with 142. Vincent Tutiakoff is running a distant third with 79. Bowers and Faith are from Dillingham, and Tutiakoff is from Adak.
