No Challengers Running for Mayor, City Council

Friday, August 16 2013

The candidates for city office are in, and there’s not a single challenger on the ballot.

Unalaska mayor Shirley Marquardt, and incumbent city councilors Dave Gregory, Roger Rowland, and Alejandro “Bong” Tungul, are all running unopposed.

Marquardt’s seeking her fourth term as mayor. City clerk Elizabeth Masoni says this is the first uncontested mayoral election in Unalaska since at least 1989.

Gregory and Rowland have each served two terms on council. Gregory’s first election was a four-way race that required a runoff vote. Tungul was appointed to fill council seat F this March after Zac Schasteen resigned. Earl “Skip” Southworth and Doanh Tran each made a bid for that open seat.

Three school board seats are also up for election this fall. There’s one contested race in that field: Fernando Barrera and Denise Rankin both filed to run for seat E, which was previously held by Sonia Handforth-Kome. Rankin was just appointed to fill the seat at a school board meeting this Thursday.

Incumbents Abner Hoage and Tammy Fowler Pound are running unopposed to hold onto their seats.

The candidates had until the end of the business day on Friday to update or withdraw their registrations. Write-in candidates will be accepted in the election, which is scheduled for October 1.

...maybe if the Mayor and city councilors amended of its bylaws, maybe those who want to run could...but because of employment or other issues, are not able to..
