No Contest for Southwest Legislative Seats

Monday, June 04 2012
When Unalaskans go to vote for their state legislators this fall, their choices will be limited. The election filing deadline passed on Friday, and no one save the incumbents signed up to run for State Senate or the State House of Representatives.
Sen. Lyman Hoffman, of Bethel, has served the region for almost two decades. Hoffman is a Democrat, and he chairs the Senate’s powerful finance committee.
Rep. Bob Herron, another Democrat from Bethel, has been a member of the Alaska State Legislature since 2008. However, this will be the first time that Unalaskans will be able to vote for him. As part of a protracted redistricting process where only an interim plan was decided upon, the Aleutians were paired with Bethel instead of Dillingham. Herron intends to visit Unalaska in August before his uncontested race.
Unalaska’s current representative, Bryce Edgmon, is still running for reelection, but in a region that will no longer include the Aleutian Chain.
