OC deals with vandalism, off-roading issues

Unalaska, AK – The Ounalashka Corporation is having troubles on their lands with vandalism and off-roading.

"We've had several incidents of graffiti with spray paint that was not only on our pretty little waterfall out in the valley all rock surfaces were covered with pink spray paint, people's initials, people's names but also up in the World War II National Historic Area, which is an affiliated National Park area," said Ounalashka Corporation CEO Wendy Svarny-Hawthorn. "The World War II structures were also vandalized."

She said the vandalism included names, obscene images, and derogatory statements toward the O.C. People are also driving their vehicles off roads near Morris Cove, Ugadaga Pass, Pyramid Valley and other places.

"There's people driving all over the tundra, especially in the last two years, and just tearing it up. It will never grow back, I guarantee it. The tundra is just too fragile. It will just keep eroding, and eroding, and eroding. We don't allow off-roading for a reason."

Currently the O.C. is doling out punishment, but now they want all vandals to be reported directly to Public Safety because they are committing a crime. Svarny-Hawthorn said the Corporation is tired of having their lands destroyed.

"It's just really disturbing that we allow people on our land for recreation and this is what happens," she commented.

And if it doesn't stop, the entire community might feel the repercussions. "It's been an increasing trend for native corporations across the state to close their lands to anybody who is not a shareholder of the corporation."

Svarny-Hawthorn said the policies will not necessarily change, but it has been discussed by the board. She asks that if you see any graffiti or see any one off-roading to report it to the O.C. or to Public Safety. She also notes that selling berries picked on O.C. lands is also prohibited. Berry picking is for private, subsistence use only.
