Oil Spill Causes Road Delays in Valley

Friday, March 23 2012

An oil spill slowed traffic on Broadway Avenue yesterday afternoon. Windy weather blew a heating fuel tank off its pedestal and into the roadway. Homeowner Anavilla Alfonzo says she was enjoying a day off when she heard a loud crash.

“It just scared the hell out of me because I was thinking the roof fell or something because I’ve seen that on the news in Anchorage – there’s so much snow that the roof fell.”

Alfonzo looked out the window and saw her 200-gallon heating fuel tank in the roadway, spilling heating oil.

“I don’t think there’s probably a lot because I think the last time we had it filled was December.”

A passing motorist called 911. Emergency responder Zac Schasteen says they built a dyke to keep the oil from running into a nearby drainage and used absorbent pads to clean the roadway.  Schasteen estimates that at most 40 gallons of oil spilled into the road.

Alfonzo says she’s going to move the tank around to the side of her house and build it a stronger foundation.
